Hay Racks

[Tundra Ridge Whitetails]

Just got some wall mount hay racks and was wondering what everybody thinks the best height to install them is. will be putting some in adult pens and one in the fawn pen.

IM only guessing. since rack little uptown for me:D A deer will eat from the ground, to high as they can reach,to eat, no problem, Whatever looks good and fawns can reach if desired. couple feet or little mor work great.Dc

Yah its uptown for me too, just looking to cut down on the wasted alfalfa. they waste alot throw'n it on the ground.

All the alfalfa i ever fed. couldnt get around the stem waste,i leave for few days then rake the piles and burn. i dont think the feeder will change that, But More sanitary for sure.i just keep it cleaned. some are grinding with mollasses.and whatever.seem like good Idea.i slip few pellets in feed sometimes. TRICK,EM:D Might waste more in Rack????

I built a hay cradle last year and wired it up to some T-posts. Deer were happy to eat from it, but still had the same waste on stems.

Don't use them in a pen with antlered bucks. They will get them jammed on their antlers and either rip them from the wall, or break their necks trying.

Just a couple more thoughts - We use rubbermaid trash cans in our doe pens. Cut a hole out of the east side, The hay stays dry and you don't waste a lot of leaves. For the bucks we use water tubs and turn them on their sides. Again trying to keep hay dry and prevent waste. In the end, whatever works stick with it.

good point scott. aready had no plans for puttting them in with the bucks. them antlers sure are a pain. but with out them there would be no deer farmers lol
