Are you talking about haylage?

Hay dealer has big square bales of alfalfa, (900 lbs.). It's dry second cutting alfalfa. All I know is the preservative is sprayed on the hay as it's being baled. From the research I've done on hay preservative, I would think it's a propionic acid base.

Robert--I've looked at chaffhaye for the past two years and even got the samples. Looks like great stuff, but am unable to get it around here and the price of trucking makes it way too expensive. Would love to feed it though.

The preservative I believe you are referring to is a acid, It is used on hay when it is moisture is to high to bale. The acid helps to prevent hay from heating up
when moisture is to high. The hay will not mold or carmelize. It will help hay retain its protein that it was baled at. I bet your hay is nice and green like the day it was baled. For more information http://ohioline.osu.edu/agf-fact/0013.html.

ADM is also looking into selling hay in a bag. I picked up a sample bag at their last meeting and it looks like great stuff. It is chop0ped alfalfa/timothy hay with molasis. I, too think it is the way to go. Good, consistant quality hay is hard to get. The cost difference really isn't that bad when you consider bale waste and a big factor many could look at is not having hay around the hay bunk to collect moisture and parasites. Hay in a bag should be a much cleaner way to feed.
I was told ADM would know for sure if they will stock/sell this product by Jan. 8. I hope they do, I would be a definite customer.
This also had a mold inhibitor added and they said the company making it guaranteed it against mold or $ back.
