Due to the "Global Warming" it has been extremely cold (20's and teen's) the last few nights for Uvalde, TX. I was wondering what you northern guy do different when you are going into the winter month. Do you target feed to incease the temp of the rumen to increase body temp? I have deer not making it through this cold and am wondering if i could have done something feed wise to help them out during these cold times... Thanks

Also... is anyone loosing deer to peritonitis from A.I.?

I don't think it's the cold as much as it's the extreme temperature swings. We've had 25 below zero but if they are able to slowly adapt, they are fine. All I do different in the winter is feed them hay also but mostly because everything is under 2 feet of snow.

A little extra corn will help them in cold weather.

In Montana we go from 50 F to minus 30 all through winter. I live in what is called a Chinook zone. I think our deer expect this and have a great coat of hair. With that said I always increase the carbs when the weather is expected to drop or we are going to have strong winds. So I think extra grain is in order for the deer to stay warm. I might almost go twice as much grain in the cold and good hay is always available.
I would also guess deer in Texas don't have the hair coat the far northern do just because our weather is expected by wildlife. Good luck with the deer.

new years was -40C with the wind chill, tomorrow is going to be +1C , I feed the same feed they self regulate themselves, just keep the feeders from getting empty. I would rather fight cold than disease anyday, cold is just a plan.... disease is sometimes a lot of luck.
