Bird Poop in the Feeders.....

We use 10 foot cattle feeders under a shed roof to feed our deer. We are having problems with the birds using our feeders as toilets. The last few years we had some bird droppings but this year it is has become a real problem. The sides of the feeder and the food are covered. I put up fake owls to try and scare them but, it did not work. Anyone have any ideas on what work??

put the feed out just before dark and the deer will clean it up before the birds come in the morning. Or Lots and Lots of shotgun shells work. lol

Put Goldin Marlin in water to disolve and then pour it on crack corn. Let the corn soak up and dry, about two hours. Put crack corn on the outside of the pen. Then pick up the dead birds and feed them to your coyotes!

my cats have been helping me, I have two outdoor cats that will sometimes lay around by the feeders just outside the fence, they cant get in the fence but they will lay right outside of it. once in a while they will jump at birds and chipmunks if there are alot of them there, that makes the birds nervous when they see the cats and they wont come in. its also nice because the cats dont bother the deer at all. But i really like TR Whitetails idea of feeding at night

I had lots of birds and i put up some of those pin wheels that spin when the wind hits them.....they where metal and made lots of noise...this scared the birds away......the deer take about one day to get used to them.....its worth a try as they don't cost that much. They last about a year and then they need replaced.

Believe me, the Goldin Marlin works and if a coyote eats the bird he will be as dead as the bird! So pile those little tweeties up so the coyote can get 3 or 4.

I heard monofilament line near the feeders interrupt the birds' agenda-starlings don't like it. Trust me, I had several thousand over the winter, especially when the snow and ice was on, though my advice came along too late. I did soak bird seed (mix) with Golden Marlin and only got a coon out of the bait, though I saw birds of several species feeding from the pan. I acutally found dozens of birds killed (presumably) by the deer in the feeders, while others were wounded or otherwise mutilated, which I took care of.......

Uncooked rice in pans or in bird feeders, the birds eat the rice and swells up in their stomachs and gives them deadly constipation.
This way i don't worry about the deer getting the fly bait to, or any pets that may be around. Something else that works great,but mother nature needs to help. I have 2 hawks that sit on my fences for hours, just waiting for mice and birds. My bird population is about null.

little bird poop dont bother me, no more.i got 5 cats i see bird feathers all time.it use t0 bother me.to the point i picked poop out trouighs.starlings only come in the winter, sparrows what few i see it dont hurt least dont bother me. you hardly see a sick bird, i would be more afraid of chickens and pigeon, somebody ask for help on ticks, they say guines or chickens. kinda confusing if you ask me. i have never had coccidiosis.so i dont worry bout some poop. before i got deer had about 50 hens 300 white homers 100 rollers which died all time was sick.so what im trying to say get few cats they will go where the birds are.i would rather have a bird than a coon.dont worry bout a few. they never get use to a cat!. cats keep em thinned. poisin gets all critters so got to be careful. only ones opinion. turned into long story. Hang plastic coffee can lids about six foot high or so around where feeders are. It doesnt keep all away but helps. Last week I moved a feed pan(away from hanging lids)so it was in the shade to keep feed from drying out and noticed more bird crap in that pan than the rest. I always pick out the bird crap before I put feed in pan.
Dont use fishing line it will only last a couple days. Use nylon string and melt the ends to keep the knots from coming out. Only use about ten or twelve inches of string or the wind will tangle them up.
I have built traps, tried golden marlin, shot em, cuss at em, chased em.
They just keep makin more. I wish someone would come up with a bird proof feeder that a small guy could buy or better yet build.

DC-I took some kittens to the farm last year. One ran off and became wild, the other started hanging around my parents' house, which is right next to the farm, and my mother took her in. Now she's a pet who doesn't hunt! Anyway, I'd like to get another go at it, though I sometimes see some wild cats in the pens. I sure don't chase 'em off when I see them. I think they feed on rabbits as much as birds. It seems I have a lot of rabbits this time of year when clover starts coming on strong.

The rice thing sounds like a cheap and safe way to control birds. Do they just disappear-I mean do they go off and die somewhere else? Or, do you find them on the farm dead? Just curious.

The rice thing is an urban legend. I tried it on sparrows that i caught in a trap and none died.

at one time i had 11 cats mama just keeps on. get rid others.i dont know it can drive you sane.dont no dead birds lot feathers.she is gonna drop in day or to.get rid somemore.they stay down carport built like barn. i see them laying underneath feeder all time just waiting. i got new 22 sighted in this morning:D dont worry bout them get a cat or 5 shoot rest dont say notin to peta. or anybody got be raised there.from barn stock.they cleared out my pygmy rattlers only bit one cat he died quick. couple days stuck face right on him.aint seen no more had a few. little bad snake. I too had that problem with everything from ravens to crows to red squirrells and chipmunks always waddling arround in feeder.I puchased a couple of tube feeders from thundervalley and the only bird that gets to it is the smallest of them like chickadees and they mostly just sit on the outer lip which doesnt make for any real big problems.they are a little spendy but my feed has been a lot cleaner and so far no squirrels,chipmunks or mice.

I have used "one hole feeders" . They were , I think ,for sheep. It is a feeder with about fifty lbs. capacity and one flap cover to the feeder. The deer lift the flap with their nose and eat. It falls shut....no rain damage, no birds , and almost no spillage. I am sure you could make it to hold more grain than that. The only down side is big bucks as they grow their racks have trouble trying to get into the feeder but for does and anything without antlers, it is the bomb. I started mine with wiring the flap up most of the way a few days and then slowly lowering it over time til it was shut and they all caught on fast. They are all metal and I got tired hearing the flap falling shut all of the time so I used some rubber in the right spot and it was peace and quiet after that. 100 per cent no birds or waste. Jim
