Our spring of 2010 fawning started for us a couple of days ago at Independence Ranch. Surprisingly enough we have had no live bred does fawn as of yet, but we have had 3 of our A/I'ed does fawn.
I am excited about each of the fawns born and am expecting great things from them. I am not sure if Poncho has ever been bred to a deeper doe than Dolly, and we were fortunate to get 3 girls from that effort. Dolly is of course the mother to Updraft who scored 268 4/8" @ 2 in 2009.
Shadow and Grace is a special cross as well. Grace is the half sister to Dolly (same mothers) but then has Maxbo on her top side. We all know how Maxbo and the Flees line have produced. Then we took Shadow back to Grace.
Kelly is of course the womb sister to Max Thrust a Maxbo son who scored 262" @ 3 in 2009. So we took another Maxbo son named Shadow and bred them together.
Lots of production behind all of these crosses and we look forward to the future. Stay tuned for more updates as our fawning season moves along.
Thanks for looking:)

Update.
Today Bubbles had her Poncho fawn. A single boy. Take note of what I feel is the strength of this breeding. His grandma Pebbles is in the pedigree 3 generations in a row. This is sure to have serious passdown abilities if he is used for breeding at some point.

Today we had a nice surprise after yesterdays HORRIBLE day we had here.
Today we had a buck fawn and a doe fawn born. We weren't expecting her to have twins but she pulled it off anyway. The fawns are, Matrix / Tonto / PA Geronimo. Double PA Geronimo and double Tonto. I can't wait to outcross the little girl with Updraft. I want to thank Ron and Mary Pierce for their donation at the WOW benefit of a Tonto doe, and then for going the extra mile when their original donation died before I got it home.
The horrible day was when a 2 year old I was keeping secret somehow tore his antler OFF on the fence and then turned the other side into a bloody stump.
He is a PJ son out of Max Thrust's mother which is Flees' Butkus/Magnum/Louie. That makes him pure Flees and out of a proven production doe. He WAS off to an even better start than what Updraft was last year at age 2. I thought I had another winner on the farm:mad:
Now I just hope we can keep him alive:(

Roger,
Sorry to here of antler damage to your PJ son. Do you have any photos of him before he got hurt? I have couple of 3 year old PJ sons that also looked great at 2 years old.( they were out of Maxbo full sister does) With PJ being born at Apple Creek we have some great PJ does to look at crossing with Updraft or Updraft sons in the future. Thanks for keeping us posted.

I had not taken any pics of that PJ son yet this year. I was gone from home from May 9th until May 26th and since coming home I have been really busy so I only snapped 2 pictures of Updraft just to compare them to last years pics at this time. (Of which Updraft is ahead of what he was last year at this time)
I really am disappointed that this PJ son got hurt. His name is Afterburner and he is the one in the middle in this picture from last year. Not a big yearling but was off to a super start this year at age 2.
Michael, you know you guys own the mother now. She was live bred to Updraft this year. That was a nice purchase by you guys at the Top 30:)

Michael, I have no idea what caused him to bust himself up on the fence. I just know I am really disappointed by it. As you know we have such a small number of animals, but I am proud to be producing like we are. It would have been nice to have another monster buck on the farm again this year besides Updraft. I guess we will have to see how Contrail does and we still have Max Thrust here until fall as well.

I am anxious to see him as soon as I get home. I can tell you he is alive and well, and when I saw him last he was slightly ahead of where he was at the same time last year.
Thanks to everyone who is calling and emailing wanting updates on him.

Rog, sorry to hear about your Mom. My mom fell and broke her arm a couple of years ago, but luckily didn't require surgery. Like Jack said, falls just seem to come with age for some reason. She recovered very well but the older you are the longer it takes. It is sometimes hard to realize that our parents are getting older and just can't handle everything the way they once did. Mine are in their early 80's and I've really seen a big change from even 5 years ago.

I know many like to see the bucks even though they are not done growing. I also like looking at bucks, but like seeing them when they are done.
However I know some start to wonder if a deer is sick or injured if they never see a picture so here is one I took today to prove Updraft is still alive and well and obviously getting bigger this year as well.
I am also attaching a picture of Updraft from about the same angle so you can compare last year on June 28th and this year on June 25th.

Thanks much everyone.
I am very happy with how he is growing out. I just can't believe he was somehow able to grow even more mass and now he is adding more mainframe points as well. Everyone I have spoke with who got fawns out of him says their fawns are huge as well. If he is passing that massive body on I assume he will pass along those antlers as well.
Is it fall yet??? I just can't wait to breed and then get fawns out of Izzy who is Updraft full sister but 2 years younger:)
It seems we just wish our lives away;)

Here is our big boy on July 23rd 2010. Updraft of course has lots of growing left in him yet. I can't believe how massive his body is as well as his antlers. His fawns all have big bodies as well. If his body was more normal sized his antlers would seem even bigger I suspect.

Below is a 2 year old son of Max Thrust. Max Thrust was a Maxbo/Butkus/Magnum/Louie son we produced here and he scored 262" at age 3 last year. We have since sold ownership of Max Thrust to Adam Rowland in MN. Adam will be taking Max Thrust home later this fall.
This 2 year old son last year scored 155" at one and looks to be well past this this year at age 2. He also is not done growing but I got some pics and decided to share them with everyone.
We are considering offering this young buck for sale as a breeder if anyone wants to contact us for more information.

I was hoping that today I could add to the discussion the official scores of the 2 Big Guy sons we have here. Today during our TB testing we knocked down both Updraft and Downdraft. Unfortunately I was unable to get an official scorer to attend today. I did however have 4 other farmers here besides my wife and I and the vet and his assistant to do the first circumference measurements, the beam lengths, and the width measurements. I will still need to give the cutoffs to an official scorer now to see what they come up with.
We also tried a new technique of molding the burrs to allow the antler replicator to have greater success in replicating the entire antler to the most exact dimensions. The molding stuff worked REALLY well, and I was lucky to have a taxidermist here to assist with the molding of the burrs on both Updraft and Downdraft.
Each of the 4 other farmers did the measuring for us and recorded the numbers. This was the best we could do this year to this point. I don't know what more I could have done to be as legit as I possibly could.
IndependenceRanch
10-01-2010, 07:32 PM
We got the numbers back from the official scorer who scored both Updraft's and Downdraft's cutoff antlers. Although he is an official scorer since he was not present for the antler removal we will be only advertising Updraft and Downdraft as estimated this year.
Also the scorer decided not to credit all of Updraft's circumference measurements since he thinks some of them could be considered "palmation." Therefore he used the first 2 smaller mass measurements in place of the others.
Updraft 317 6/8" at age 3
Downdraft 225 7/8" at age 3

Thank you gentlemen.
Yes Dennis, Dolly is a special doe at our place. But she has been long before she ever had any fawns. She has always been "Laurie's Dolly" and I was informed right from the start that Dolly would never be leaving the farm. Dolly is like our child, well...actually Laurie's child:)
It's all good though as we decided to take on a partner last winter with Dolly and the agreement says she stays at our farm. However this past springs fawns belong to Laurie and I.
Since we now have a partner I don't know if there will ever be any more fawns from her offered for sale after this season. So her 2010 Poncho daughter mentioned above may well be the last ever offered.
Michael Peters, Steve Smith, and Phil Hinch of Cola Blanca own the only other Dolly daughter ever sold. Pearl is her name, and she is a PJ doe who had an awesome looking Updraft son this past summer. Watch for "Jetstream" as he will be big! He looks a lot like Updraft at age 1. Great mass, LOOOONG tines, long main beams, and some extras up high and going out. Just a really good looking yearling buck.

I know there were several folks who really liked the look of our buck Contrail this year. I just thought I would let you all know what he ended up scoring for the year. This is NOT an official score, but I promise it to be as accurate as I could get.
Contrail at age 2 in 2010 scored 194" with a 6x5 mainframe and some long tines. A very pretty buck.
Contrail again is a son of Max Thrust on the top side and is out of a Tomahawk/WRW Moose doe called Madison.
We are actually offering a 2010 Updraft doe fawn out of Madison at the coming Buckeye sale. I like this cross so much that I have 2 of her sisters that I have kept and will be breeding this fall. They are of course just a year older.
If anyone has any questions about the 2010 doe fawn offered in the coming Buckeye sale just let me know.

Rolexi has one of the deepest pedigrees in the country. The best part is it is verifiable through DNA all the way back 6 generations to Max. The way I see it Rolexi is built with a 6x6 or better frame and long tines. GD Romeo will add the width that gives the shock factor.

Winnie is being A/I'ed to and then backed up to Updraft. Have you seen the 2010 pictures of Big Sir? UNREAL! What a monster of a whitetail. All this on top of Flees' Harry and Bart's full sister.
I have never bred to produce big bucks. I always bred to produce the next great doe. But I can't wait to see the bucks that come from this breeding! That right there is why we are in this industry!!!

Proven genetics top to bottom. This doe and these fawns will put you in the game.

Here is a rare and special offering! Have you ever wondered just how well some of the amazing old school bucks of the past could do in the modern stacked and proven does of today? Here is an opportunity to see for your self. Poncho A/I'ed to Grace. Grace has taken to A/I the last 2 years. We used Poncho semen the fall of 2009 and split the straw into 2 does and they BOTH took giving us Poncho fawns spring of 2010. So Grace is set, the semen is set, I see no reason why this doe doesn't give you the rarest of offerings.
Take a good look at what the pedigree will look like on these fawns. The grandma to Updraft and Downdraft with Maxbo on top of that yet. Then Poncho. The fawns will have O-105 (Hardcore's grandma) Pebbles 3 times, and Poncho twice.
Grace is very calm and easy to handle. A real pet of a doe! Contact us for more information about this very special offering in the coming Top 30 sale.

Now we A/I bred Blossom to Cardiac Kid. This doe is offered in the coming Top 30 sale. You will get the first crop of fawns from Blossom. I can make this offering because I am keeping Blossom's womb sister. But you will be the first in the country with this cross. Cardiac Kid/Big Guy/Maxbo/Butkus/Magnum/Louie. No holes in this pedigree.

The most unknown and underrated deer in the pedigree of Ruby is Thunderbolt. A 5x5 mainframe scoring 210". Mass, tine length, a super great look, and best of all a proven producer. Thunderbolt has had numerous sons over 200" and many by age 2. Thunderbolt was purchased from Eddie Ray Borkholder by a small farm here in WI. I was lucky enough to get Vivi from Thunderbolt and one of the famous Buster/Mandy does. Buster/Mandy does ALL produce BIG frame typicals. The most famous of them being Big Guy. Vivi bred to Updraft doubled up 2 of those famous sisters. Ruby is all about monster frames and now we are adding a Texas buck called 2 Wide with his long tines, 6x6 frame and 32" width.
PLEASE GOD LET ME GET A DOE FAWN FROM THIS!
If all else fails the backup buck is Downdraft. 25" wide inside with long tines and being Updraft's brother we will see what that creates. I would say it is a win either way.
NOTE: We have 2 identical breedings with Ruby and Tuesday. Twins bred the same way. It is possible we could offer an extra doe fawn from this breeding to the public.

Addie is a seasoned doe but in great shape. In fact she had twins last spring. She hasn't had a lot of sons, but 2 of them scored 215" and 205". She is "old school" pure Flees breeding and is bred to one of the deepest pure Flees bloodline bucks in the country. Downdraft scored 225 7/8" @ 3 and had an inside spread of 25" with a 5x5 mainframe.
You want production? You want proven? You want a pedigree that holds its value year after year? You want this doe!
She is being offered bred this winter. We are considering having her in an auction, but you can ask us for details.

Chloe is 100% Flees except for some Maxbo tossed in. Then bred to Downdraft which is pure Flees bloodlines makes these fawns some powerful little buggers. Chloe is line bred using Y-0048. Breeding Max Thrust to his mother was not planned, but Chloe was born and grew out looking very good. She has great lines and is very healthy. Not a negative product of inbreeding but instead a positive product of line breeding. If you like these tight crosses so you can breed them out for the big score this might be just what your looking for.
This bred doe is for sale off the farm.

Cagney bred to Maximus DT brings together a famous doe called O-105. She is the grandma to Maximus DT and is also in the bottom side of Updraft.
Madison had a very pretty 6x5 mainframe typical son in 2010 scoring 194" @ 2. That son was from Max Thrust, but Cagney come from Updraft who is bigger than Max Thrust. Cagney bred to DT will produce large frames and good looking typicals just like the hunters want.
Downdraft (225 7/8"@3 and 25" inside) is the backup buck to the A/I. Either way is great breeding and will be very interesting to watch the results.
We would consider selling Cagney bred as she is, or open next summer. Her 2011 fawns may also be available. Contact us to discuss options.

Lacey bred to GD Romeo is a really special effort. This will take the pretty and straight typical of Madison and blend it with the wide high scoring frame of GD Romeo. And let's not forget the massive, tall tined, high scoring frame of Updraft in the middle!
This breeding also brings the Patrick line back together while adding some Sundance as well.
These fawns will be able to be bred to about anything in the country and produce. Good times!
If we get the doe fawns from this breeding we are hoping for, Lacey would then be available next fall.

This does foundation on the bottom comes from the Jack the Ripper line. Wild Rivers Whitetails has produced some monster bucks from that line. Then we added the Flees line using Ringer who was a wide big framed typical. Sierra is already partially line bred by use of Y-0048 which is the dam to both Ringer and Max Thrust. Now we are stacking one of the deepest and most proven pedigrees in the country with Downdraft. These fawns will have Pebbles 7 times, Poncho 6 times, Bucky 3 times, and a whole lot more powerful animals as well.
If your looking for a bred doe with a good pedigree that will produce big bucks this girl will do it. And the genetics of this girl and her fawns will have value in the industry.
We would sell this doe off the farm bred.

Haley bred to Updraft. This same combination produced a 1 year old on our farm this past summer with 11 1/2" G2's and 10 1/2" G3's, great mass and long beams. Haley might not put you in the Top 30, but she is really good solid breeding that is going to put a lot of big bucks on the ground. Bred to Updraft gives her the top side that will produce super fawns, and takes you one step closer to being in the Top 30 without spending the big dollars on your bred doe.
Haley can be bought off the farm bred.

Thanks much Josh, and thanks also to you Nick.
I won't lie and say the postings weren't about marketing because of course it is. But it is also about looking at pedigrees. I just really enjoy the heck out of it. I wish others would post their pedigrees. I know some don't because they feel it is some "big secret" what they are breeding with until after the breeding season is over. But I don't look at things that way.
I say everyone should have their own thread that they post pics and pedigrees on for everyone to have fun looking at. I know Russell likes when we utilize the forum like that.

Roger, This might be a dumb question but I will ask anyway. Why did you decide to A.I. Winnie to Updraft then back her up to him? Couldn't you just live breed her to him and save the A.I. straw? I was just wondering. I enjoy looking at the pairings you made.

No dumb questions Nick. In fact it is a very good question with multiple answers.
First off when you read over the pedigrees you were only looking at the pedigrees of my does that I own. So you weren't seeing the pedigrees of the other does owned by the folks who have does by our place to be bred to Updraft.
I won't say who all has deer here because it is the owners decision if they want to tell the world or not. But there are several does here this fall to be bred to Updraft. And when a live breeding is sold we sell it as a LIVE breeding and not an A/I backed up to the buck like some out there do. (Unless prearranged that way which none were this season)
Of course Will Ainsworth the partner in Updraft has does here as well as part of the contract on Updraft.
When you add up all the does total being bred (both live and A/I) it exceeds the number of does I feel is too many for a 3 year old buck to breed. (This was discussed in another thread topic somewhere else on the forums)
So all the sold breedings and a couple of mine and a couple of Will's are actual live breedings. The rest of Will's and mine are A/I'ed to and then backed up to Updraft.
I chose to LIVE breed Kelly to Updraft because she is being sold by me at the Top 30 sale as LIVE bred. Again to me LIVE bred is LIVE bred and not A/I'ed and backed up to the buck. I want the best for my investors.
Another reason I chose to A/I breed Winnie and then back her up to the buck is a "test" of sorts for her. This is her first year breeding and I want to see if she takes to A/I. There have been trends seen in some does around the country that some take and some that don't take each year to A/I and it can sometimes be repeated year after year. I want to see if she takes or not before dropping a big dollar straw of semen in her next fall.
The straws of Updraft is of course not costing me the same as someone who would buy them so I don't have an issue using some of them in our program here.
I could have done the same with Downdraft this year but chose not to since he doesn't have as many does with him and therefore doesn't exceed the number I feel is safe for him in one year.
I hope that clarifies things for you. Again a great question and thanks for asking:)
Thanks Roger that was a great explanation. I now understand the process alot better. This is our 2nd year to A.I. and I still have alot to learn.

I also want to thank a couple of folks for your really nice emails to me about my postings on here. It is nice to hear that others see the benefits of line breeding and that some take interest in viewing pedigrees.
Now that I am almost home I will get those pedigrees you requested out to you for you to use as you wish.

I have decided to try and put together an article on getting started in the deer business. I started a couple of weeks ago and this won't get done overnight. It will take some time because I want it to be more than the basic info really.
It seems every so often we have new folks wanting info and it would be nice if they could get the basics and then some in one easy to read booklet form. I of course have my experiences and my opinions and they will be included in the writing. But I want to be sure I try and cover as many angles and aspects as I can.
I would be glad to get input from others about key items and ideas they feel should be included and would be helpful to new folks getting started.
You can post them here or send emails directly to me at
independenceranch@yahoo.com
I will then try and put together the most comprehensive booklet possible.

Laurie and I are proud to say Independence Ranch will again be in the Top 30 sale this season. Our 5 lots will be selling on Jan 13th and 14th 2011.
We dug into some of our very best animals and they will be offered up with great excitement. Below is a detailed posting of what is being offered and we will of course be glad to answer any questions anyone might have about any of the lots or options that could go with them. Just contact us by phone or email to get detailed information about the lot that you have interest in. As of the date of this posting we have not seen any activity with any of the A/I'ed does listed below.
The lot I expect is kicking off the start of our sale this season for Independence Ranch is Babydoll. I kid you not, Laurie put this doe fawn on the “don’t touch my baby list” about one week after she was born. But I told Laurie that we needed to offer our very best for the sale this year, so here she is.
Babydoll (DNAS#81305) is a 2010 bottle fed and tame Poncho daughter. Now you might see some Poncho daughters for sale on the rare occasion, but I don’t think you will see many of this caliber. Many folks have commented to me about how cool it would be to see the results of breeding a powerhouse legend like Poncho to one of today’s DEEPLY bred and PROVEN does. So we did just that. The dam side of Babydoll is our very best PROVEN producing doe named Dolly. Dolly is the mother to both Updraft and Downdraft. Updraft at age 2 scored 268 4/8” and this past summer at age 3 he scored 317 6/8”. Downdraft this past summer scored 225 7/8” with a 25” inside spread and a mostly clean typical rack. Both of these bucks are being used in our breeding program and in breeding programs around the country. The cool thing is that these 2 brothers are only the first of Dolly’s sons to be born. What an amazing start she has had.
Take a close look at the pedigree of this doe fawn. You will see line breeding at it’s VERY best here.
Babydoll is offered exposed to a Shadow son from a Maxbo doe going back to the same fantastic bottom side as Dolly herself. ONLY BECAUSE WE HAVE TRIPLET SISTERS IS THIS DOE EVEN BEING OFFERED FOR SALE.
Note: Dolly is now co-owned with Dream Ranch so this could very likely be the last fawn ever to be offered for sale from this truly PROVEN girl.
The next lot I would like to let everyone know about is Blossom. ( DNAS# 81301 ) Blossom is a 2009 bottle fed doe sired by Flees’ Big Guy who is now owned by Jarrod Washburn of Clam Lake Whitetails. Big Guy has produced several very good sons over the past few years. Of course there is our very own womb brothers Updraft and Downdraft, but there have been others as well. Big Guy provides an early maturing influence that is needed in today’s markets. Both the breeder market and the hunt market demands this.
Blossom’s dam side is Kelly who is the womb sister to Max Thrust 262” at age 3. Again early maturing. Just look at the increase in profit margins if all your bucks were reaching hunt size by age 2 or 3. Blossom is A/I bred to Cardiac Kid who is the HOTTEST buck on the Flees farm with an inside spread of 35” and a 7x7 frame. The 7x7 frame of Cardiac Kid added to the 6x6 frame built into Kelly makes this cross a sure bet for high scoring, early maturing monster frames.
Now take a look at the 2011 fawn pedigree. Kelly is pure Flees on the bottom side with Maxbo for the out cross. Are you aware of the power Maxbo crossed on Flees has had? Then right back in with Flees 2 more generations through Big Guy and Cardiac Kid. Now take a look at how Pebbles (4 times), Bucky (3 times), Pretty Boy (twice), are all placed together in the pedigree. The filler spots have Buster, BJ, and Louie as well. Predictability of passdown traits is the key to this breeding. Again I can only let this doe go because I kept her twin sister.
The backup buck is Updraft just in case the A/I didn’t take. Check out Updraft’s pedigree put on top of Blossom. You will soon see it is a WIN, WIN either way.
The next lot has been said by many to be their favorite lot we have in the sale. (DNAS# 52097) Grace is a HUGE bodied, 2006 bottle fed doe who is so tame Laurie likes to lay across her back and just pet her. She loves peanuts but likes to simply have her ears rubbed just as much. Grace had a twin sister who we sold off our farm as a fawn. That doe was later sold by that farmer for $31,000. However Grace is now being offered A/I bred to none other than Poncho. Again Poncho is offered in a DEEP pedigreed modern doe with a PROVEN background. A TRULY RARE OFFERING! Grace’s mother is the grandma to Updraft and Downdraft making Grace the half sister to Dolly. We already have a Grace daughter out of Shadow so I will reluctantly offer Grace for sale. Again we are offering some of our VERY best to the bidders.
The Poncho semen was checked by Dr Mike Bringans and said to be very good, and was split only once. It is from the same lot of straws we used last year. The straw we used last year took in both does it was used in. Grace also took the last 2 years to A/I. I see no reason why she wouldn’t take and give Poncho fawns in spring. If she didn’t take to the A/I the backup buck is Updraft. Look closely at that possible pedigree option and you may well even wish that the A/I doesn’t take:)
Another lot we are offering is Y-129 and Y-130 who are choice buck fawns. As some of you are aware our farm is small in numbers but we have been producing with great success. This year we entered the fall with a total of 2 buck fawns on our farm. We decided to offer a choice of these 2 buck fawns to the highest bidder. If you take a look at their pedigrees you will see we are talking about some outstanding choices not often seen for sale.
The highest bidder will not only have choice buck, but they will have the choice of being 100% owner or sharing ownership with us 50%-50%. Should the buyer choose to share ownership they will get the benefit of our marketing program for possible semen sales. We will also house the buck and share in the expenses with the buyer. Should the buyer choose to take 100% ownership all we ask for is 10 straws for our own use.
One choice is Y-129 (DNAS#81303) a Shadow son out of the doe named Grace mentioned in the lot above. So you have Shadow/Maxbo on the grandma of Updraft and Downdraft. This breeding gives you Maxbo twice, Pebbles twice, and O-105 the mother to the famous Blue 37. You all recall what Maxbo on the Pebbles line has done right? WOW!
The other choice is Y-130 (DNAS#81304) a Poncho son out of a doe we have called Bubbles. Bubbles is a direct Bucky daughter out of Little Pebbles. Triple Pebbles, double Poncho! What more is there left to say? Haven’t you always wished you owned a pure Flees buck of this caliber?
Our final lot is 6 straws of Updraft semen. (DNAS#56502) I think by now you are aware of who Updraft is. A Big Guy son from a Bucky Jr doe going back into one of the deepest and most proven pedigrees in the country.
What many are not aware of is his stats. In 2010 Updraft had brows over 13”, G2’s 16” G3’s over 14”, G4’s over 10” and a G5 of 10” with beams of over 29” He had flyers that gave him an outside spread of 44 ½”. He had so much mass that the measurer felt he couldn’t use all 4 circumference measurements so he only took the 2 smaller ones on each side to use. The well known antler replicator doing the replica work said it is one of the most amazing racks he has ever worked on.
Updraft was used as a backup buck at age one and because of our A/I success that year he was used very little. However he did breed 2 doe fawns. They each gave a buck fawn who in 2010 as yearlings showed that Updraft is passing down his amazing tine length, and massive, long beams. They each had G2’s over 11” G3’s over 10” with very long beams and great mass, and are displaying the same characteristics for well placed extras for good looking uniqueness and score.
The semen was collected by Dr Mike Bringans and was packed to provide the ability to spilt each straw into 2 does. The straws were also tested at an independent lab and the results were outstanding. A post thaw of 75% and a stress test on the heads of the sperm of 73%. This semen is considered very good and is easily split between 2 does.
All our semen sales are limited and under contract. No straw can be resold, traded, or bartered. Also no more than 2 does per straw, but keep in mind it is very good for use in 2 does and we highly recommend doing so. This is all to protect the value of the offspring from Updraft which will in turn provide Updraft investors with a more stable market.
Laurie and I would like to thank you all for looking and we invite you all to stop by our booth. Details of a special appreciation giveaway will be coming soon. It always has been and will continue to be our goal to provide the very best in quality service to all our investors.
Hope to see all of you at the coming Jan 2011 Top 30 sale.:)

When the last of our lots finish selling we will draw out the winning number and they will be getting the prize.
As soon as we get the prize details worked out I will be posting that information.
This giveaway is to show appreciation to both our buyers and the bidders who bid against them.

I hope everyone has had a safe Holiday season so far.
I am still trying to get the plan set in place for our giveaway taking place during the coming Top 30 sale. I am trying to make it a really nice deal for some lucky winner.
What I can tell you so far is that during the time our 5 lots in the Top 30 sell we will be putting the winner bidders number AND the backup bidders number for each lot into a hat.
When the last of our lots finish selling we will draw out the winning number and they will be getting the prize.
As soon as we get the prize details worked out I will be posting that information.
This giveaway is to show appreciation to both our buyers and the bidders who bid against them. roger thats awsome , what ever you give away will be great, to bad i will not be a part of it , got to save my 2 cents for DOWN DRAFT

Ok we have a final plan in place for our giveaway taking place during the coming Top 30 auction.
To show appreciation to everyone who,
is the high bidder for one of our lots during the auction,
AND
to show appreciation to those who are the 5 backup bidders of our lots,
AND
to anyone who buys any Updraft of Downdraft semen or live animals directly from us during the show PRIOR to the drawing taking place after our 5th lot sells during the auction.
Each of them will have 1 entry into the drawing for the grand prize.
If you are the backup bidder during one of our lots please be ready to provide the ringman with your bidder number so I can add it to the drawing.
If you are bidding from on-line I will get your bidder number from the website dude running the on-line auction.
I want everyone mentioned above to have a fair chance at the prize.
That grand prize is an X-Caliber darting rifle complete with the whole shabang. The case, scope, practice darts and all.
We will have the rules for review at our booth so stop in and take a look early in the show for all the details. Also if you have any questions you would like to ask before the show feel free to email us at,
independenceranch@yahoo.com
or post your questions here and I will try and answer them when I see them here.
Note: This is for fun and yes, promotion of our lots and farm. I will make all the final decisions on the rules and timing of the drawing.
The one I ordered is black not camo like the photos below.
I hope this adds some more excitement to an already fun event.
Can't wait to see everyone at the sale!:)

I hope everyone realizes that buying even just a single straw of Downdraft or Updraft during the coming sale gets them an equal chance of winning the X-Caliber rifle, same as anyone who buys any of our lots OR is the backup bidder on our lots during the Whitetail Extravaganza sale.

Please note we are talking about the Midwest Select sale with this posting and not the coming Top 30 sale next week.
Thank you to both Eric and Jerry for accepting us into the Midwest Select sale this season. This is our first time consigning to this great sale and we are excited to be a part of this great event.
I do have some corrections I need to point out though.
Our Lot Premier #23 located on page 74
Our Lot Premier #49 located on page 182
Our CWD date is incorrect on both lots. It should say Oct 2002
Another thing that is small is our last name is spelled incorrectly. It should be Pietrowski
On our Lot #23 the pedigree shown is pretty much completely wrong. Just simply disregard it totally and look at the pedigree sheet attached to this posting.
It is true though that the fawns will have Pebbles in them 6 times!
On Lot #49 I also want to be very clear that Kelly is LIVE BRED to Updraft
The picture of Updraft used with the lot is him at age 2 in 2009 when he scored 268 4/8"@2.
Also I want to point out that our ad on page 75 has an error with the pedigree for Addie as well. Again see the attached pedigree sheet for an accurate display of the pedigree information.
Not sure how I missed that during proof reading the ad. I have been very busy with work the last few months so anything is possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read these corrections. I understand that come sale time there will still be confusion so I hope that as many as possible see this information.
Please contact us if you need further clarification.
Roger:)

I have been getting some feedback in emails that some feel the drawing for the darting rifle should only be for those who actually bought something during the Top 30 auction and that the backup bidders shouldn't be included in the drawing.
I would like everyone to remember that this drawing is not just to promote my lots and farm. It was and still is intended to also be a FUN time for people during the show. I also feel that without ALL the bidders it wouldn't be an auction. It would simply be folks standing in the front of the room looking dumb. And I don't need any help looking dumb as I have that one down pat just fine already:o
NOTE: The rules are staying the same. ALL buyers and ALL backup bidders to the highest bid for each lot and EVERYONE who buys Updraft or Downdraft semen OR a live animal directly from us during the show but PRIOR to the selling of our 5th lot WILL BE INCLUDED in the drawing for the FREE X-Caliber darting rifle.
I do thank everyone who has contacted me about our lots so far. I feel we are indeed offering some great lots that will do very well for the buyers. I also want everyone to realize that the after the sale support is there as well. It is VERY important to me that all our investors are happy and successful.
Attached here once again are the lots in order they will be selling during Kevin Grace's coming Top 30 sale.
NOTE: Lot # 1 may also be a bred doe now. Laurie saw the Shadow son in with the doe fawns breed Babydoll on Dec 31st. Laurie went out that day to separate the cover bucks from the does and she saw him jump and breed her. The buyer of this lot may well be ahead of the game come spring.
That got me to thinking so I looked back and sure enough. Every doe fawn we have sold at this time of year has ended up giving the buyer a fawn the next spring. Two years ago I sold 2 doe fawns in Kevin's Select 30 sale and they both gave the new owners a fawn, (Levi Mast of Mast's Whitetails and Steve Smith, Michael Peters and Phil Hinch of Cola Blanca Whitetails), and I sold Kevin Grace in a direct sale a doe fawn that winter and he got a fawn as well from his. Earlier this fall I sold Scott Follett a doe fawn and she was also seen being bred back on Dec 19th so he should also be getting a fawn come spring.
I am glad that our investors are doing well with their purchases.

We are considering the idea of starting in another location Independence Ranch II
This would be a joint venture with another person.
I will consider the following states for this adventure. In no particular order, MO, OH, OK, PA.
I would prefer to join forces with an already existing deer farm who would like to work with us in a partnership of sorts. I will supply the deer and the semen.
This new location would have to have the ability to do A/I work both physically (A handling system) and have the rights inside their own community (Meaning the Amish community if it would apply).
I do have a couple of folks in mind I intend to speak with during the coming sale, but if you would like to discuss the idea with us look for Laurie and I at the Top 30 sale to discuss the possible options available.

I have not sat down and really analyzed the results of the whole sale yet, but yes Crocket I do think overall things are better this year than last year. There still were a number of bargains to be had by the buyers though as well.
I felt that a couple of our lots sold on the soft side, but I also did better on a couple of them than what I expected also. I had a dollar amount in my mind I hoped we would make and we did meet that number so I am pleased with how the sale went for our farm.
More importantly Laurie and I enjoyed hanging out a visiting with the many friends we have made over the years by going to these shows.
Laurie and I have had talks with Cola Blanca/Mingo Creek and we have agreed to start a partnership of sorts together. More information will be coming later, but for now we are very excited about how this new partnership will expand our presence further towards the south.

Today I was looking through the sale book for the coming Buckeye auction and I would like to just say a little about our lot in this sale.
Lot #70 on page 48.
Apparently it will be the last lot sold on Friday the 28th.
Sierra is a bottle fed 2009 doe and is LIVE bred to Downdraft 225 7/8"@3 with a 25" inside spread.
Sierra is a Max Thrust 262"@3 daughter. Sierra's mother Kasey is a Ringer daughter. Ringer was a beautiful 6x6 scoring 166 6/8"@2 with a 21 2/8" inside spread. He unfortunately died so we have no other information about him. Ringer is a Bucky Jr. son out of F2/Y0048 making Sierra a double bred F2/Y0048 doe. F2 is the dam to Max Thrust 262"@3. Sierra carries a strong 6x6 mainframe in her genetics. The anchor doe is a WRW Jack The Ripper doe.
The fawns will have an unbelievable amount of Pebbles and Poncho built into them.
Pebbles 7 times.
Poncho 6 times.
Bucky 3 times.
and Bucky Jr and F2/Y0048 each 2 times.
All this while using Maxbo as the outcross.
There is a very low reserve on this animal and I doubt it will come into play during the sale so feel free to bid.
Laurie and I thank you all for looking:)

Our lot for the coming Buckeye auction that I would like to just say a little about.

Our 2 lots in the coming Midwest Select sale are Addie and Kelly.
Thank you to Eric and Jerry for having us in this years sale.
Addie is a 2001 bottle fed doe of pure Flees breeding. She has had at least 2 sons over 200" making her a proven producer. In 2010 Addie's son had a 8x6 mainframe plus a flyer off the backside and scored 212" @ 3. Anyone who has studied the Flees genetics knows the strength of the Louie/Little Boomer combination. It is no wonder that Addie has produced sons over 200". We actually acquired Addie this past fall for the express purpose of making this cross so as to offer it for sale in this auction.
Addie was LIVE bred to Downdraft 225 7/8" @ 3 in 2010.
Kelly is a 2006 bottle fed doe who has a real taste for raw unsalted peanuts. Kelly unfortunately lost her buck fawns and has no sons alive so I am not able to show her production ability to you. Kelly is the womb sister to Max Thrust 262" @ 3. Max Thrust is showing his passdown ability with the sons he has produced so far. Long tines, great mass, and 6x5 and better frames on his yearlings and 2 year olds.
There are plenty of Maxbo daughters out there, but not all of them come from pure Flees does like Kelly does. I can offer Kelly for sale because I have a daughter from her and Big Guy already.
Kelly is LIVE bred to Updraft 317 6/8" @ 3 in 2010.
Both of these does would make great additions to any herd. Laurie and I look forward to doing business with whoever decides to invest in our lots offered above.
Our farm is built on great genetics, and our #1 desire is to provide the very best in "after the sale" support to our valued investors.
Laurie and I again, and as always, THANK EVERYONE for looking:)

Hey Michael, if it gets too hot for Downdraft down here in Oklahoma, you might consider hiring Barbara to stand outside his pen and shoot him that icy stare that she gives me when I forget to come home for a day or two. That oughta keep him in his winter coat plum through August. She so frigid, when she changes pants the furnace kicks on !

Deerfarmer2011, It is funny how womb brothers can be so different. Updraft shows the Poncho side, Downdraft shows the Bucky. I loved them both. We have an Updraft son (Jetstream) that is very nice and soon to have many from Downdraft.

... It is funny how womb brothers can be so different. Updraft shows the Poncho side, Downdraft shows the Bucky. I loved them both. We have an Updraft son (Jetstream) that is very nice and soon to have many from Downdraft.
On another discussion thread I explained how each of the brothers took after one of the two assets of the line bred pedigree.
As Michael said Updraft took the Poncho side, and Downdraft took the Bucky side. It even goes a small touch further than that.
Updraft took the Poncho and Buster side, while Downdraft took the Little Boomer, Bucky and Bucky Jr side.
Deerfarmer 2011 I will take your post as a compliment to how Downdraft looks. I will say however that I can honestly say the jury seems very split between Downdraft and Updraft.
From emails, calls, and from talking with folks at the booth and having them ask to take pictures of the mounts, it would seem that the jury might be split about in half on which brother they like most.
Personally I like them both;)

updraft has more bone but is to narrow i believe and downdraft has a much better look as far as as a normal rack.with a narrow rack and those flyers sticking out kinda takes away from him.Downdraft has a frame on points coming off that frame as they should.
that is just my thinking anyway.

Curtis I would have thought Jarrod would have coined that phrase:)
As far as names go, yes we use some odd and different names that many others wouldn't want to maybe use. But at least you don't see too many duplicates then of our bucks and bucks from other farms. I hate when two bucks have the same name in the industry because sometimes pedigrees get all jacked up and people never know which buck a person is referring to.
I have a hard time coming up with new names though. Good thing we don't raise very many deer here. This fall we only have 2 buck fawns on the ground and I haven't put any thought into what to name them yet.
