I was recently reviewing some articles and literature on this website and had some interest in learning more about opportunities in regards to genetic improvement and standardized EPD's in the deer industry. I am a senior undergraduate student at Kansas State University with plans of attending veterinary school in the fall of 2011 but I have had an interest in learning more about the deer industry and specifically the genetic aspect for several years. I am currently working for a whitetail breeder in north central texas for the summer and I am enjoying it greatly. My father and I have had plans for years of starting a whitetail breeding operation where I am from in southeast Kansas so I have taken the initiative over the past years of learning more about the industry and working with current breeders. I have extensive veterinary experience in large as well as small animals with my personal interest mainly involving cattle. I was hoping that with your experiences and connections in the industry you might have some suggestions of others I should contact for more information or that you personally know of opportunities for research and or current studies in this field. Thank you for your time and I would greatly appreciate your input.

Hello! My husband and I have a small whitetail deer farm in Portage county, and I'm a graduate of KSU (both undergrad and graduate -- undergrad -- English -- grades 7 - 12, graduate -- MLIS -- Master's in Library and Information Science). Have you received any answers to your question?

Penn State University has a deer breeding operation on the PSU campus. They have had classes there for over 30 years. I am not sure if this is what your looking for exactly, but it may be a start.

There are other schools that do offer medicine, specifically toward deer. I believe Ohio State may offer something as well.

Good Luck !

As far as I know Ohio State only does deer work when someone brings one in. They don't have their own herd or anything, but I bet you could talk to someone there that could help you find what you're looking for. I might try any of the vet schools in states with a lot of deer.
