Button bucks button's

Evening guys and gals, I have a question about button's on bucks. Is there any relationship between the size of buttons a fawn has to the horns he will grow? Or any studys done on this? The reason I'm asking this is because I have a 3 1/2 month old . He was born on the 25th of May. Very good genetics. And his buttons are as big as his eyes and there out of his head about 1 to 1 1/2" thanks guys and I hope all is well in your deer pins! Jim

Big buttons have not ever been a good indicator for me, I think if the buck fawn is born fairly early in the fawning season it will have decent buttons regardless of it being a small 6 point or a 180" buck the next year. just my observation.

I agree completely. I used a buck fawn to back up my AI girls in 2008. He had the biggest buttons by far on the farm. Guess which buck I didn't pick that was a button buck the same year... Texas Tea! He blew the other buck away with his yearling rack and certainly this year at 2.

I have not been doing this very long but the first batch of fawns i had. The biggest bodied buck fawn come november and december ended up putting the best rack on the following year. So I look at the bodies more than anything, but that is just me.

i can buy that meyers thats less proteins and nutreients going elswhere to catch up on bodysize which can go to the horns that would be my thoughts my smallest buck fawn by body size is my smallest yearling rack wise and thats my beleif that he had to catch up on his body size before he couild start puting it on his head

There is no correlation I've seen from the button size to the yearling rack. So keep your excitement to a minimum :)

I had a monster bodied buck fawn last year with nice buttons that looked like olives on two inch cigar pretzels. I called him Moose. This year if his left side looked like his right side he might have been a 10pt with 18"IS. Instead his left side was a split tined spike so maybe next year. :rolleyes::p

Well, I haven't been doing this very long either so all I can input is my own expirence. Our fawn with the biggest buttons last year turned out to be our biggest yearly rack. His buttons were probably close to 4 inches long and we haven't scored him yet this year. Attached is a pic of him from August 4th. It will be interesting to find out if it holds true because we have a fawn this year with abnormally long buttons. I guess will will just have to wait and see. Good luck with yours.

I will take this a step farther. Irregardless of button size how about spread or angle of the buttons. Does this forecast the bucks future spread?

I had a buck fawn that had almost nothing for buttons and was fairly small bodied but we did notice he had large pedicals. He scored 135 as a yearling and 204 as a 2 yr old.

I have one whose buttons angle out and are more down the side of his head than usual, i am hopeing that means he is going to be really wide, but you never know until he starts growing his rack, i will try and get a picture.
