I've read a few posts about bottle feeding bucks in the hope of getting a jump on antler growth and was wondering this can only be a one year thing and then genetics take over. If you bottle feed and have a monster buck I don't think he will have the pass down genetics which we all want.

I have heard different,I heard that it take's a couple of year's for the bottle feed buck's to catch up.Pass down gentic's,weather bottle feed or not it is still the same gentic's.

I used to think it took another year for bottle bucks to catch up with mamma raised but I'm not seeing that as I raised more buck fawns in the last 2 years. Can't tell bottle raised from mamma raised. ZZ

NEED ADVICE !! I commited to bottle feed an AI'd buck fawn for someone. The first fawn
born was a single buck fawn, thinking that i had several more to come in I didn't pull him.
Well i am still waiting on antoher buck fawn to be born from AI and i am now on day 205.
my question is : (considering I can catch him) Is it too late to pull him now he is 10 days old..??

Can it be done? Yes. Could it fail for you? Yes. Not much help I know, but that is pretty old to be trying it unless something bad has happened to the mother. I would not try it myself.

I've started 94 Fawns this year. You can tell a BIG difference between 24 and 48 hour fawns. I can't imagine 10 days! Let us know how it goes if you do try it...

Brian, How long are you leaving your fawns on the mother?

12-48 Hours. I try to get as close to 24 as possible.

My thinking exactly i try close to 24 as possible. Much easier to get started and bond with you faster.

I just brought my first of the year in. 50 hours or so. Tried to pull her last night. Looked for two hours in knee high clover. Found all the boys but never found her. Tonight she was chasing momma around the pen. This should be fun!!

2 years ago when we first were starting we got 5 fawns that were right around 3 weeks old. Of course they wouldn't take a bottle so luckily they drank milk replacer out of a bowl. To calm them down, my wife slept in the shed with them hoping that they would quit bouncing off the walls. They did, and by morning they were chewing on her hair and walking on her. Two of them were sold to someone else and we still have the other three. The buck is the tamest and comes running to the fence to get his treats. My wife got chiggers from laying on the ground...she's a real tropper! It wouldn't be impossible but it wouldn't be easy.

Brian, thanks that is what i was aiming for also. I appreciate your time! Good Luck to ya!

Matt, good luck with that fawn. I pulled one that was 4 days old and she is on the bottle pertty good. I was looking for here in knee high grass, about the same problem as you had, but she was laying down and i grabed her. Hope all goes well!!
