Getting Started

Hi all! I'm investigating setting up a deer farm on my 21 acres in Western NY State. Aside from this interesting looking forum, are there any reference books or other websites where I could get needed information? Of course I also need to know about permits and fence heights etc NEEDED in Western NY--Does anyone know where I get those?

Also, are there any other NY State deer farmers on here who might be interested in talking with me?

Glad to see you found the forums! You'll want to talk to Ag & Markets and the DEC for all your permit information and fence requirements.

Zoar..Welcome to deer farming. We are also in NY. When you go onto the DEC website and pull off the reg's. Watch what they are calling requirements and what they are calling reccomendations. They sometimes get confused and try to pass off reccomendations as requirements. Seen it happen to a few people. Please feel free to call me anytime. I am in Rush, just south of Rochester. And would be more than happy to talk to you and show you our farm.
