I have a doe that is wheezing and is going downhill weight-wise. I have 2 different antibiotics to administer. One is oxytetracycline and the other is Draxxin. Due to her wheezing, she obviously has a lung problem which could possibly be pnuemonia. Is one of the antibotics better for the treatment of lung problems than the other? Want to administer one or the other by dark tonight. Thanks in advance for your response,
Mark

Give it the Draxin, be sure and deworm her and I would give her some Dexamethasone (its a steriod) if you think she has pneumonia.

I'm not sure but a few years ago one of my breeder bucks came down with pneumonia in early July and a vet had me nock him down and give him Dex and Naxcel for 6 days. (this was before Drax.) It took care of it.

Banamine is also an anti-inflammatory (non-steroidal) to keep in an arsenal as well, plus it has fever and pain reducing properties and also works great with draxxin - from my understanding.

Mitch and Dan,
Just felt I needed to add this so folks didn't get the idea to use Draxxin/Dex for the everyday "small or early onset issues" that would/could require an anti-inflammatory. Not trying to correct you in any way, just adding to your advice... ;)

As always folks, check with your vet before administering any new meds to your deer. Some drug residuals last longer than others and someone may eventually be eating the deer one day in the future - and we all love venison steaks..... :D

Another point about using Dex is that because it is a steroid, it can also cause an immune system suppression, so sometimes, when you are fighting an infection of some sort, and you don't want to weaken the natural immunity, Banamine is a better choice for an anti-inflamatory. Dex is also not recommended for pregnant does, steroids can cause abortions. I am a big fan of both drugs, just have to choose which one to use case by case.

I know LS-50 is considered an old out dated drug but for pneumonia and wheezing a strong does of 5cc in the windpipe has always worked for me ..Just a thought
