I do not currently have any whites or pieds, I would like to get another someday, but I really love to see pictures of them. They are really interesting. I know some of you raise them, I have seen pics from paintedmedows, WVdeerguy, and AllenB before, Nice herds you guys, I just thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to it. Anyone, you guys I just mentioned, or anyone else, that wants to share some of there pics go ahead, They are awesome animals and I sure others will enjoy to see them as much as me. I can contribute, I purchased a little pied doe last year, she was a sweet little thing. Unfortunately I only got to enjoy her for a month, she got bloated from a midnight feeding, I noticed it when I went out at 6 am the next morning, just in time to see her take her last breaths, I was holding I didnt have time to do anything. I wish I could have got to see her grow up. I hope to get another pied one of these years. Anyway here is her pic.

AntlerShed, Thanks for the compliments and the new thread. We are VERY proud of what we have done with our piebalds. Mixing piebalds and high power genetics has been an uphill battle. I think I am reaching the summit. I know other farms are trying the same thing I am, painted meadows and Allen B to mention a couple.

We have some great colored fawns this year and would be glad to make you a good deal on a new fawn if you were interested. We still have 3 does remining to deliver their fawns. Two of them are piebald and one brown. All three are bred to Patch. The picture of Patch and I was taken about 10 days ago. I will try to get a couple new pictures the next few days. We have had a couple new births lately that I haven't uploaded the pictures to my computer yet.

All of our fawns are sired by Patch this year. The fawns pictured all come from regular brown does. The first two are twin bucks from an RCM Apache daughter (253"), the third is a doe from an RCM Noble daughter (323") and the fourth is a doe from a J-44 granddaughter (209"). Color and top genetics, what more can a guy ask for ? LOL

Wild Rivers Whitetails
06-21-2009, 01:07 PM
OK - I got the pedigree a little mixed up. JohnnyMax is actually a grandson of John. John, who is a Jack the Ripper son, was in a pen with pied does. There was only one pied buck fawn and because of a fence failure, he ended up breeding one Mad Max doe. The result was one fawn - JohnnyMax. Our Mad Max does are out of Mad Max on top and Jack the Ripper does. Our pied does come from a pied buck fawn we bought from Jim Severt. He was bred to Mudbug does. Mudbug is sired by Redoy Mustang and out of Jack the Ripper does.

Soooooo - we have Jack the Ripper in there numerous times along with such heavy stuff as Mad Max and Redoy Mustang. I'm including a pic of Mudbug at 4 since he is probably the only one mentioned folks aren't familiar with.

OK - Mudbug is sired by Redoy Mustang and out of Jack the Ripper does.

That's pretty interesting when you put mustangs picture up against mudbugs - the g-1's are almost identical except they are switched with the characteristics on the right side of mustang being on the left side of Mudbug. That is pretty cool and awesome stuff for sure!!

Mudbug, (I like saying that name) is a good looking buck....

Some nice looking pieds in here too... Keep up the good work folks.

Allen,

great looking bucks !! Are those 2 yr olds? I can't wait to see mine at two. Besides Patch all we have this year are 1 yr olds. They look good, mostly 9 and 10 points, but not near as much fun as looking at two and three yr olds. Patch is looking awesome. He is bigger than ever, but still a clean 10 so far. I am hoping for G-5's this year.

Giv eme a call when you get a chance. I have some adult does that I was going to sell this fall. I can breed them to Zeus, my white Noble (323") son if you want them bred.

You and Nick keep up the great work. Come over and visit some time.

I could tell you anything you wanted to know about color genetics in the cocker spaniel but deer genetics I am trying to get a handle on so my question is this:
Does the pied color come from crossing pure whites to browns or is there a separate gene that causes the separation of color?
Thanks!
Kimber

PaintedMeadowsBJs
07-05-2009, 07:20 PM
Two different gene's...Well Three to really mess you up...
There is
1.Albino (all white pink eyes) can come from any deer.
2.Senneca Whites (White with brown eyes) had to have Senneca in bloodlines somewhere.
3.Pied (White and Brown Blue eyes mostly) OR...(White with blue eyes) But their eyes can be shades of green(mine aren't...but others are) had to have Pied in bloodlines somewhere.
Is my best way to explain it...Jack...Allen...Did I cover everything???

Good job Billie Jo, All my whites have brown eyes. Most of the pieds have blue, with a couple being brown. Like some one posted a while back, ( may have been Billie Jo) its like an easter egg hunt at fawning time. Allen

I've got all brown deer. What do I breed to to get some Pied?

wvdeerman
07-06-2009, 08:04 AM
I think you did a good job in explaining that Billie Jo. An easter egg hunt is a good description, but at our house we compare fawn season to Christmas Morning. It's always exciting to see who gives us what!!

wvdeerman
07-06-2009, 08:09 AM
GCW matt, I was writing the same time you were. You need some deer with piebald genetics to get piebalds. The deer that are piebald usually are the ones that give the better colors. I do have two piebald does for sale, a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old. I also have semen from my big typical piebald PATCH available. He scored 172" last year as a clean 5 x 5 and looks to be much bigger this year. If you want to know more you are welcome to call me on my cell 304-288-4090

so how did you pied deer farmers do this year for fawns? Im talking pieds and whites, vs your normal brown fawns. Painted you seem to have a lot of pics of beautiful pied fawns this year, did you have brown fawns born there too?? Thanks for the pics

PaintedMeadowsBJs
07-13-2009, 09:10 PM
Thank-you...
Yes... a lot of great fawns Brown ,White, and Pied... I have three different herds.I will be Ai'ing Pied Doe's With great stuff this year and will be breeding them with Maxbo XL and several other great bucks next year...I want to see how nice we can get the Pieds ...Unfortunately people inbred them in the past and they had health problems out of it and gave Pieds a bad name...Now several farmers are making sure to breed them correctly...I think they will go along way...If you think about the Pieds in the wild they have a lot harder time as fawns and deer and they make it ...So I feel they are not inferior health wise like people think...because of a few people inbreeding.

Out of my pied breeding I normally end up a little more than 50/50 being Pied.
I never breed a Pied to a Pied.
Out of the Pied breeding's You will get a solid fawn that will throw a Pied fawns...I also will not breed that solid deer to a Pied.I have about 15 Pieds on my farm right now.I have about 50 brown deer and Fallow deer.I need to count them and separate color and kind I guess.
My three herds are one totally certified herd (Breeder herd) 7 year CWD TB /BD
one herd that is 7 year CWD but no tb/bd status (shooter herd) can test if sold.
and my ones that were pets that I didn't tag till I had to (I like the natural look)
Call if you have more questions.
If you look under Painted Meadows in the farm section you can see some of my bloodlines in brown and Pieds.

I wrote a major article for Deer Tracking Magazine last fall called Whitetail Wonders (with photo help from the Harold at Deer Ranch, Mitch, Nolls Whitetails, Shadow Valley Deer Farm, Harvest Acre Whitetails and Wild Rivers, and Blue Mountain.)

Would like to do a follow-up type article that could show off some of these beauties...any suggestions on where I can go on this? Genetics? Marketing issues? Love the colours...sure could do with some more promotion! Any suggestions?

The one looks more like a Senneca White... Does he have that in him also? I can't tell his eye color...

allenb
08-05-2009, 06:01 AM
Billie jo, both of the newest have dark eyes. Zeb has dark eyes, but one white and two pieds born this year have blue eyes, the rest being dark. It is my understanding that the Senneca strain has dark eyes. Is this correct? Thanks, Allen

PaintedMeadowsBJs
08-05-2009, 06:57 AM
Yes... The Senneca's have brown eyes.

wvdeerman
08-05-2009, 08:34 AM
I have a seneca that has blue eyes. Maybe she is just weird. Her mother is a seneca and when I bred her to Patch she had a cream fawn with blue eyes.

Tara, I have a suggestion for a follow up. It seems that I have had trouble getting many hunting preserves to acknowlegde the added value of a trophy piebald over an average brown buck that scores the same. Many farmers and preserve owners refuse to acknowledge the rarity of these animals. Many of us that have started specializing in piebalds have gained alot of recognition lately. We have a long way to go yet, but we have broken ground and gained strength. We have proven that piebalds can be grown into trophy proportions.

If you breed a white doe to a brown buck what are the odds of getting a pied fawn? I'm really hoping for one since my friend that has the doe says I can have a fawn if it is pied!!

Wild Rivers Whitetails

Breeding a white doe to a brown buck gives you a 50/50 chance of having a white fawn - you won't get a pied unless one of the parents is pied.

That 50/50 chance is assuming the white doe came from a one white and one brown parent. If the white doe came from two whites the chances of having white fawns with a brown buck are higher.

Great looking fawns, Dennis. I am glad they are doing well for you.

Here is a buck fawn we had born last week. We have named him Joker. He is from Mortons sister and an RCM Noble son. He should be a good one in a couple years.

Here is a pair of twin piebald doe fawns born over the weekend. The mother is a white doe from Ratchet line and the father is a piebald buck that is from our great piebald Patch. So, the grandfathers of these girls is Ratchet and Patch...not a bad combination.

Very nice looking pied fawns BillieJo and Jack. I wish you guys lived closer to me, some of them would have a new home. They sure do grow on you. I ended up with two white buck fawn and two pied buck fawns in the whitetail. Then I also got the white hybrid female that I needed for my project with the mule deer cross.

I also got one white elk calf. That was interesting to me as I thought if you bred white to white all offspring would be white. This was not the case with the elk whites. From six white elk cows bred to a cream bull I got five brown calves and only one white calf. Go figure as I wanted six white elk calves.

If that is a picture of one of your fawns you are years ahead of the rest of us that want black deer. They sure are neat animals. Scott from Apple Creek will have semen later this year we hope and then we can start this color project.

My knowledge of this genetic color is it is a recessive and both parents have to have the gene.

That is the exact look I'm trying to make with my crosses. That is one of the most beautiful animals I've ever seen. What a rare animal in the wild. We had two mule deer in our area like that, a doe and her fawn. Sad to say either the poachers or the coyotes got them.
If someone does harvest that animal it's a shame the semen couldn't be saved for preservation of that color in our domestic mule deer.

Here is a picture of 2 yr old ZEUS. Zeus is an RCM Noble son. A clean 5 x 5 and we estimate him to finish up around 130". Perfect symmetry and nice long beams. I can't wait for another two years of growth.

Zeus, was drawn for semen in October. He scored 123 1/2" with some tips broken off. Would have been over 125" as a 2 yr old for sure.
