I know most of the discussion is on deer, but I have some elk as well. One of my bull calves born the other day has slate blue eyes. The pupil is obviously brown, but all the other parts of the eye are a very light slate blue. Kinda freaky looking honestly. Has anyone had any experience with colored eyes before in their elk or deer? He's not blind and seems to be doing really well so far.

What are the genetics of the calf. The awesome line throws blue eye calves. Not sure why but it does.

He's out of a 9L bull from Tom Nevins herd, and a Dynasty over Awesome granddaughter. Funny that you knew Awesome was associated with the blue eyes. Good to know.

I just got a blue eyed heifer out of awesome breed to my legend daughter.
Toms 9L bull is very underrated. He's a smoken ash son that has produced great sons including rocky. Sounds like you did pretty well with him.

Steve:
My breed bull is a 9L son who went 467 last year as a 5 year old. Hopefully he'll mix well with the Awesome girls I have. Glad to here your calving season is going well. Now back to the eyes. Are there are negatives to the blue eyes that I should be aware of, or any issues you have heard of?

Most young mammals start out with blue eyes of some value from light to intense. Most fawns, cats, puppies, for example. Coyotes keep the blue into their first year. Im not as versed on captive elk, but likely some lines carry it as more dominant and more vivid too. Its just the iris, right? Regardless, cool!

I haven't heard or seen any problems with it. Its a little strange but neat.

I have a doe fawn that is two months old that has blue eyes. All the others have turned to brown but hers are staying a bluish gray color. She looks cool.
