Ed

I've been trying as well and haven't had any luck. No one will even call me back once they find out I'm trying to insure deer. Hope someone here can help both of us.

I have got my deer insurance through Farm Bureau. If I remember right it costs around $.20 per $100 of value.

We went through our insurance agent and she came up with a "farm" policy that we thought was extremely reasonable. It's basically what a pig, cow or any other livestock farmer would have. We pay a premium on each animal's worth. It may depend on if you live in a more rural area and your agent is familiar with livestock insurance. Probably something like what Farm Bureau offers.

I have insurance through The Farm Bureau also, but I am probably going to drop it. Read the fine print. I my instance my deer have a limit to their value, of $1500 per head, they only wanted to go to $1000, but i got them to raise it. This is for each animal even my breeder buck!? They big draw back i have right now is that they only cover accidental death with limitations. ie... If a dog is chasing the deer on the outside of the fence and the deer hits the fence and kills itself the insurance will not pay. The deer committed suicide the dog didn't physically kill the deer. If a car runs through my fence, and the deer run to the opposite fence and kills itself, and the car didn't actually touch the deer, you guessed it suicide! Now if the dog bites the deer and kills it I get paid for the deer. 2 years ago I had a buck get struck by lightning and they covered that. Like i said find out what is covered before you start paying the premium. They chances of a dog coming by is a lot more practical than lightning striking twice!!

Matt, sorry to hear that. You're right that policy sucks. I would drop that too. What I did with mine was we (agent and I) sat down and reviewed a policy made for a couple of Elk herds. We then customized it to fit my needs. I currently have several deer insured for well over $1500/head. Several years ago I had a dog chase some of my deer while I was at work. A yearling buck hit the fence broke his neck, layed right where he hit the fence. Of course the dog was gone by the time I got home but found dog tracks where he run up and down the fence. I submitted what Farm Bureau required and was paid for the deer.

Sounds to me not all policies are the same, even within the same insurance company.

Sounds like the "cap" value is pretty low on deer. Don't know about you guys but $1500 doesn't even come close to covering most of our deer. How do you guys handle this? I'm calling tomorrow to set something up, just wondering how you guys approached it.

The Texas deer CO-OP has one with two options a 3% and a 7% the larger covers a lot
including lap, transporting, handleing, and drawing of bucks, the % is the number that
you put on the animal per year IE a buck 100,000 = 7,000 dollars a year. This is the way
it was told to me. but i have not talk to them myself.

Hi,
I am in Minnesota too and just wondering who your ins. co. is. I tried to call Farm Bureau here and they said I have to have all my auto and home policies with them before they can draw up a policy for the deer.
