How many times do all of you split your straws and what are your success rates? We will be AIing October 26 so it is time to decide who gets bred to what. Has anyone had any success spitting a straw 4 ways?

Mark,
Last year we AI'd 2 does with 1 straw. Come May 7th and 8th between those 2 does we had 4 fawns and all 4 are still healthy. We AI'd 3 does total the 3rd did not take. All 3 were yearling does.
Hope this helps.

Depends on semen quality. I know farms that split 4 times and got 80%

Depends on whether you are doing Lap AI or in the chute. Since we always do in the chute we only split them once.

I know 2 different farms that split a straw...................8 ways! and all 8 on both farms!
I WOULD NOT reccomend it but you asked! 2 to 3 is the norm

Last year split two straws 3 ways and one 4 ways, Lap AI was 100%.

We've found it really just depends on the quality of the semen used. If the counts are really high you can sometimes get away with splitting straws 4 ways. We generally split straws 2-3 ways and Lap AI around 70-80 does a year around mid-November. Typically we see around 75% which I believe is about the average here in Tx due to heat and other factors

Last year I used full straw's 4 of 5 took to A.I., the one that didnt was a yearling that I A.I.ed on her 2nd cycle. This year I plan to split all straw's 2 way's and try 8 doe's to see how that work's out.
