I think anybody breeding with maxbo XL this year will be very happy!!! Maybe Im being just a little prejudice because I bought one of the last of 2 straws left for the north a few months ago but wont be using till next breeding season. Im just amazed at the BIG! Wide! Framey deer this buck is throwing!! And when you consider theres only 10 straws sold for the north , theres alot of big sons out there ! I feel he has to be considered one of the best super sires going!!!! And I may be wrong but I was told there are not alot of straws of him to be sold next year cause theres not many left?? What a shame! but Im sure some of those big sons of his will produce!! I saw GD Xccelerater this summer in person and he is awesome!!!! and saw other great ones here on the forums!! Good Luck everyone on your breeding programs!!!!

Gestation for whitetail is approx 202 days. The backup buck goes in 14 days (give or take a few days) and if the doe didnt take to AI she will come back into estrus on day 21 (again, give or take a few days). Case in point: IF fawns are born 200 days after AI date, your AI took. IF fawns are born 220+ days then your doe DIDNT take and your backup buck got the breeding.

Wayne, you are right. I mean this is the most stress I go through each year! It seems every year gets worse, first you pick your sires you want to breed with, then you narrow it down, then you have a final list. Then all of the sudden something happens, and one of the bucks you really wanted to use doesn't draw, then another one you really wanted to use dies, then the semen you were going to use is not getting drawn until after you AI, well you can see the scenario and where I am going with this. So now, I am going to mix all of the semen I have in to one large bowl and let the chips fall where they may! Some people say they are not gamblers, well this Ai thing is a crap shoot and I may have to start drinking before Oct. 28th gets here! I wish everyone well with their AI this fall, and please don't ask me what I am breeding with. Apparently i do not know yet as Wayne has pointed out. Thanks for the support Wayne, you could have just said that looks awesome and I would have went with it!!! Now I will probably be up another week thinking about this whole AI THING!!! DANG YOU ANYWAY WAYNE!!!

I symply wanted to know why they decided to go this route. Like I said don't want to start any fights. Specialy with but kissers who are no longer in the business. I think Gary and Jane have some very nice animals probly some of the best in the industry. Myself I feel these kinda bucks if bred for are just asking for trouble. I mean come on they can not even hold up their heads and most have to be cut or they will die. As Lamar Borkholder stated in his artical in the totaly typ mag how many preserves are bying shooters with cut antlers.
Sorry Gary and Jane if I affended you did not mean to. I just think to many deer like this don't look good for the industry.

10-27-2011, 03:42 PM
If you had the biggest deer ever I'm sure you would breed to it, no matter how it looked. Ballistic is actually very balanced and very wide - two things everyone wants. I'm sure not all of his offspring are going to look like him - but if they do that's great. We want to add points and mass to some of our lines and he is the guy to do it. In addtion, like I said, we have several awesome 2 year olds we are using this year in addition to Rex, So Big, Big Time and Blue River. We are breeding about 200 does, so will have numerous crosses and of course we are using Ballistic.

Virgil,
You just can't let it go can you. First off, if it’s me you refer to as the butt kisser that's no longer in business, well you are mistaken. I don't know Gary or Jane much better than I know you, and we have not done 1-cent of business together ever(not that I wouldn't). Oh, and I've been raising whitetails for well over 20yrs and right or wrong I still have plenty of them.
Like you, I don't want to start a fight on here. But it just kills me to see you criticizing someone else’s pride and joy on this forum. Apparently you have your idea of what you think is the perfect buck for the industry. That's great, I can respect that, but going after someone else's personal choice of breeder buck on a public forum like you are, in my opinion is just wrong.
I apologize to the other readers for getting off subject here...

Was not refering to you at all Barry and I was not criticizing them or their deer. I just wandered why they chose to breed with Ballistic after they said they did not breed with this type of deer. If you read the post about outdoorlife comeing down on Ballistic you would know what I meant.

I didn't say we don't breed with this type of deer - we breed with ALL types of deer since we want variety. When we made this cross we never dreamed we end up with a deer this awesome but we did and we're tickled pink! No one ever knows what a particular breeding will bring them and that is the beauty of this business. We all hope to better the deer we have and we all hope to have a record setter but no one can say whether it will happen or not or what that deer will look like. You just keep making crosses that make sense and go with what has worked for you in the past. We have our breeding management plan just like everyone else and it seems to be working for us.
If you are running a hunting preserve you find out pretty quickly that not everyone wants a clean typical and not everyone wants a crazy nontypical - but there will be somebody that wants each of those deer and everything inbetween. So if you want to stay in business you breed for both. This industry hinges on the hunting market.

I thought you meant you did not breed for this kinda deer. Thats why I was wondering why would you breed with him then. Sory for my misunderstanding.

Frequent Flyer, Energizer, X-Factor, Texas Tea and Cornerstone. X- Factors mother and Purple 35 both got Frequent Flyer. I never met a whitetail that I didnt like, but when I sell shooters, they pay by the inch. I am live covering some does to Redbull (303 @ 2) and Redbull will buck up my AI does. Now that AI is over, it is time to crawl up a tree. Darren :D

We went yesterday at All Out Whitetails! This year we did it all ourselves for the first time. Rod, his son Wade, Wade's wife Amanda and myself were the crew. Wade did the A-I. I really enjoyed watching the next generation step up and learn on the fly. I think he did well, it was a fun day! I hope it goes as well for all you'all :)

I finished my AI 2 weeks ago. We used Kingpin, Noble, Marlin, XWL Foreman, Dr.D, 2wide,
and GKR Abilene. XWL Tombstone is doing our live breeding as well as the back up to AI this year. We expect great things out of Tombstone. We didn't get a good pull on him in October, So we decided to just let him breed and pull him again the end of December.
Good luck to everybody!!! Thanks

Will be doing 3 late doe's for a farm up north of me in the morning we will use Sargent II and Alamo on them. Did 10 doe's here at home on the 6th and all went well with the a.i. except for a broken straw, didnt plan for that so I didnt have a back up straw that I wanted to use so one of the better doe's didnt get the semen that I had planed for her.
