Fawn Trouble

I have a bottle fed fawn that is 6 weeks old and her stool is very bloody and won't eat and weak. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Go to your vet and get Di-Trim tabs they are 960mg tabs. Crush half of one up and put in bottle once a day for 5 days or until cleared up.

I had one back in May that had stool that was all blood and with in 12 hours of the frist dose was starting to clear up.

Trish the Di trim is fine until you find out from a stool sample just what you have. It`s a possibility that you may have Coccidia and that will take a sulfa drug to clear up. Those could be Corrid, Sulforal and I`m sure there are more. A dose of Dexamethasone along with won`t hurt a bit. Both these bugs can kill but both are easily treated. Just make sure to keep her hydrated or she can go down hill fast if left untreated. Good luck with your baby.

What is your Corrid dosage and do you add it to your bottle? I have some and the coccidia is what I am afraid the 2 fawns have, especially since I did see blood in the stool early on.

Kimber I would run a drench of 2cc. It tastes NASTY but works best if used in a drench and not in the milk. Not saying you shouldn`t put it in the milk. The fawn would prefer it there. I use SMZ`s to avoid that nasty tasting stuff. Run that for a few days and you should see things clear up if in fact it is coccidia.

Albon is a sulfa for coccidia, and is butterscotch flavored. 3 cc's a day for 3-5 days along with probiotics ought to help.

Corid Mix for Fawns

50 cc water = 1/3 cup
9 cc Corid

give 2 1/2 cc morning & 2 1/2 cc evening for 5 days
These instructions came from our vet when we had our first problem.
When possible, you should have a stool sample checked.

found a couple of dead fawns in pasture over last two weeks. Wondering if that is the problem this year even though we treated adults throughout the winter/spring;0(

I lost three fawns in the last week and found out it was from infection traveling up the embellical cord . They were the first born , big, healthy,beautiful....like a fuse burning, it takes time to travel up til it gets to the blood stream...not much sign of sickness, just find them dead. The vet said to dip the navel in iodine at birth would help. The heavy rains and mud this spring is the culprit I suspect. Jim

We had one that had bloody stool. We were treating with corid then changed to albon. It cleared up within a few days. May have been coincidential, but now of course i am partial to albon... I believe we put
1-1/4 cc in her bottle once a day.

For those with larger numbers and to treat adult deer I would suggest a gallon of Di-methox, the active ingredient in albon. Saves money.
