I wish I knew much more about genetics!!!. But this is a really good question!
The first part of the question is "What bucks past AND present". When I see whats listed so far I see mostly older sires. While their production is certainly proven, should we rely on older proven sires or be trying the next generation based simply on faith (and the fun of trying something new)?
The second part of the question says "impact your herd". So we have to look at our own herds before we answer the question. Do we go with out-crosses, or do we try some line breeding. Again I wish I knew. So I'm trying a little of both.
So what bucks if I could use any would I use on my own does? My does are bred very deep with HighRoller (Timberjack, Highway 10, RolexBy10), PA Geronimo (All our foundation does), Maxbo (Maxbo Impact, Maxbo 727, Maxbo Extreme, Maxbo Select), Flees Sires (Sudden Impact, Cardiac Kid), and a few other lesser known lines.
We bought Moses (Bucky over HighRoller) to breed to some Maxbo based does as an out-cross and some Timberjack does as a line breeding. Then I threw in a few other does and really have no idea why (lol).
We bought Remax (Reno/Maxbo) to out-cross with our Highway 10 and Timberjack does and bring the early maturing power of Reno (another great sire) into play.
We put WayAwesome (Waylon/Awesome) on the out-cross of some Lethal Weapon does hoping for huge big frame typicals.
We put RolexBy10 (Rolex/HighRoller) on our Maxbo Impact (Sudden Impact/Maxbo) and Hydro Power Ax (Hydro Ax/Maxbo/Loner) does mainly as an out-cross.
I guess I'm rambling on and on and on.....If I could pick 5 bucks past and present to bring home, or back to life to breed to MY does to impact MY herd based on out-crosses and some line breeding, they would be:
1. New Image (The look and 528)
2. Maxbo XL or one of his huge sons (I don't know of buck that is a bigger producer of inches)
3. Free Agent or if I was really bold, one of his new sons! (Inches again)
4. Cardiac Kid (The look is just so nice!, I have faith!)
5. Texas Tea (Rolling the dice on this one with my does, but what the heck, he is producing!, and what a look!)

Sam,You have passed the test...............Grasshopper! LMAO:D
You are exactly right in your take on the ? as far as my thinking and how I would use these sires to compliment MY herd and inhance and deepen my gentics. While there is no right or wrong answer I find it very interesting to see the different takes other farmers have on some of these questions and the sires who get listed. But it is clear to see so far the impact some of the older sires and thier desireable traits we like in thier influence on our herds!
Keep it coming :)I think it's fun to see what other folks like!

Finally a topic that doesn't create any controversy because we have NO right or wrong answers just each his own choices. I like many of the bucks others chose but I went with some of the bucks who have consistently produced. Not saying those others don't or wont! That's what make this thing(breeding) so much fun. Some work some dont.

1. Arty-has everything covered. Width, main beams, tine length, balanced, and body size.
2. Redoy Bill-many great bucks have come from this line.
3. Waylon or Waldo-these two are getting it done on many farms.
4. Maxbo Ranger
5. Either High Roller or Hoss (Borntrager)

I would say ...
1. Rolex
2. Ridgid
3. Leverage (Marty Berry's)
4. Rattler (The Refuge)
4. Maxbo XL
If only a live breeding could be arranged. I would settle for semen from any of these deer too. That is just me though.

I think that the some old lines produce well. However I feel the new and improved lines should produce even better. With the old and new it is hard to pic just 5 but here we go.
Maxbo
Redoy Bill
H 10
Gladiator
Dream Milbo (This deer has a good look and a stacked pedigree for big framed deer. With legend an h10 son as an anchor.)

First Sire: Walks -SAVAGE!- he is showing that frame in his offspings sons and grandsons. Just do your homework you'll see what I'm talking about.
Second Sire: -GOLD BUCKY BOY!: This buck is underrated in my opinion. I'm not giving my secret away on here, but this deer is in his own league! I saw Eugene Flees buying his semen at three years old. This is the guy that made Bucky! Must seen my secret first. Oh wait, he was deer farming before most all of us.lol
Third Sire:- J-44!-( Penn State )Do your homework newbies! This buck is the reason several major deer farms are at the top.
Fourth Sire:- Heavy! Too many reasons and I don't have to elaborate. His daughters are awesome, and since good farmers breed for daughters .........
Fifth Sire: -This one is a tie between ROLEX & MAXBO XL. Im with Sam on the inches. Both are blood pushers for sure. Both have the records currently and probably always will?
WOW! I JUST IMAGINED LOOKING OUT OF MY OFFICE INTO THE PENS AND SEEING
G.BUCKY BOY, HEAVY, ROLEX, MAXBO XL, J44, SAVAGE. Shame on you Wayne!!:D

Poncho (One of Flees best producers)
Honorable mentions to... Maxbo XL, BW Sunny, Little Boomer, Reggie, Bucky, Johnny, Sundance, Rolex, Thunder
Dams
BJ
PSU J-44
Patrick
Blosser Goliath/Mary
Waldvogel Boomer

I would have to agree with you guys Rolex and XL blood pushing power.............Period!
J44 and Savage .......SOLID old school production in all offspring!
Golden Bucky boy ...........Frame machine!
Heavy...................Well I was kinda keeping that secret to myelf.................The Heavy line is getting it done, Framey Typical deer,HUGE nontypical deer and offspring that produce! Hands down one of my favorite Flees doe lines. Oh yah and Rawhide has one of the best Heavy does in his bottom side as well as what may prove to be (In My Opion)one of the best keep secrets out there in a Flees sire......................G36!

Wayne keep that G36 thing down a little. Oops. No, seriously G36 is the real deal. Ask the Texas guys that breed with him a few years back.... Just look at New Image alone a G36 monster son! My opinion... G36 is by fare the best producing Flees buck to date! Thats pretty big words there now. He didn't breed a lot but look at what he and his offspring gave....

Wayne I think you are 100% Right about G36!
As you know Pin Oak Farms owns Reggie's sister Pretty Girl. Reggie and Pretty Girl are out of G36. She has three sons. King of the Mountain(formerly POF Black Oak) 528@ 4, POF Kingfisher 245+ @3(w/ a great frame), and POF Next Exit 235+@ 2. Not bad for three years in a row, and three different sires. If you want more information stop by our booth at the Top 30. I hope you didn't want to keep this a secret Wayne? ;)
So today my picks are
1. G36
2. Stone Cold - O17 in his pedigree is working hard, and I would like to put him on my O17 Granddaughter.
3. Heavy
4. Poncho
5. Bucky
Does it surprise anyone that our lists have a lot of Flees Genetics in them?
Wow I left out a lot of Bucks that I would love to see in my program! Sunny Jr. Reno, MartyGraw, Hydro Axe, Thunder, Redoy Bill, Wow I could go on and on.

Yes Pretty Girl is the dead. When we ran her in to pull cidrs she hit the fence and broke her neck. That was a bad day at Pin Oak! We still have few of her daughters that we hope will continue to produce.

Well my opinion may have change a little since looking at a lot of the big bucks at the top 30. There was a lot of bucks there that I was very dissapointed and looked 40% smaller then pictures. But then there was some real sleepers that I was real impressed with.
My choices would be
1-New Image.. Maybe because I own him but there was over 20 guys that said he was the stand out buck at the top 30 : )... Also because his 3 yr old sons are huge!!
2-Cardiac Kid...Pretty and Wide
3-Sudden Impact... Lots of production in his pedigree and passing it down
4-G36..Only sire to ever have a 500" son and 500" Grandson through a daughter.. He produces huge with his sons and his daughters are producing also. Looks to be the most productive sire ever on the Flees farm!!
5-Free Agent ...for the inch man
It was announced at the top 30 that 95% of the lots there include Max in there pedigree. My list has change with only Free Agent having a little of the Max line but because he is producing lots of inches. I think it is time to start chasing some New Blood.
