Maggots

Found a fawn that looked like she had been chewed on. Back leg open at the joint and full of maggots. Been washing and disinfecting but the little varmints keep coming out. Some so small that they are hard to see.
Using oil to try and suffocate them but any other suggestions since they seem to be deep in the meat and joint?

If you can get a hold of some Catron IV or some other type of screw worm spray would be best. Usually can get that from your vet. It will kill the maggots and the eggs. Have to be rather quick before the maggots have chance to travel further up into the body. If they do you don't have much chance saving it.

As a last resort use some diesel fuel on the wound. Sounds bad, but it works.

The Catron IV works great to get rid of the maggots. My vet has told me to get 1/2cc of Bannamin (sp?) every 12 hours for 3 or 4 days.
From what the vet tells me the maggots well give the fawn some sort of infection and the Bannamin will keep the fawn from getting sick. Not sure if this is the best to do but it has worked for me.

I would worm the fawn, the maggots can't live if the fawn is wormed ...

I would flush them out ...even if they die in there they would cause infection in the leg and can cause the hoof to blow out...

Catron IV is good as well as worming the fawn....it is hard to to try to only flush the maggots out as you stated some are very deep into the muscle...this is where the catron and the worming will help...... they will get the ones that you can't get by flushing!! Good Luck!

You need to flush with a syringe copiously and use tweezers to pick them out. Put the syringe right up inside the wound. When you get it clean spray with Catron IV. Also give a SQ injection of Ivermectin, which will kill any maggots or eggs inside the fawn. Start on Pen-G for infection.

Did manage to get most of them with the flush. With the holiday, can't get some of the suggestions just yet (certainly does make for a must have list). Gave an injection of Baytril for now. Spraying with some strong therapeudic grade essential oils that I use for deworming my dogs that have been killing the smaller ones off so will keep doing that since it isn't a dangerous substance and is beneficial for promoting healing. Eats good, poops good so that's all I can do for now. Will work on accumulating the must have list for future "what if's". wound has a good blood supply now and is bright red instead of putrid gray.
