Indiana Deer Farmers Meeting

I thought I would pass this on as I just got it today from the Indiana BOAH. It would be nice to see a big turn out to support our Deer Farming here in Indiana.

Please spread the word about this meeting. They are proposing some changes that producers have submitted. If you do not like them, then you need to be there so they do not pass

BOAH is hosting a meeting of the cervid industry on Friday July 17th at 2 pm in the BOAH training room (following the state/fed).

Two topics:

1. TB in cervidae update - current investigation by Dr. Jim Hollis
2. Proposed Emergency and Permanent rules addressing new INTRASTATE movement requirements.



Please share this information with industry leaders and members and also those who may have cervids as a hobby.

Did anybody go this meeting? what was the out come?

I personally did not attend - but the state vet that comes to my farm sent me this information since I could not attend.


There were 14 producers who attended the meeting on Friday. Most of them were whitetail deer producers but there were also a couple of elk producers. The majority of the meeting was spent on an update of the tuberculosis (TB) situation in Indiana.

TB has been found in captive cervids in IN. At this time it has been found in elk, red deer and fallow deer. It has not been found YET in whitetail.

There are 3 sites that are quarantined and positive animals have been identified. These sites are all interconnected due to animal movement from the original site to the other 2. The original site has been depopulated and several infected animals have been found. The exact number is not known yet as some of the test results are not back. The other two sites will be depopulated if funding is available. TB has been found in other states also so there is a big drain on the federal funds available for this program.

The Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is working to identify where the animals came from to populate the original site and where animals have moved from this site. Testing will be performed as these sites are identified to determine if there is any further evidence of disease.

The group of producers that attended the meeting recommended that BOAH institute regulations to require TB testing prior to all in-state movement of cervids. BOAH will draw up a proposal to present before the board at this week's board meeting. Once the proposal passes the board, it will be publish for public comment. It will have a second hearing before the October board meeting and based on the results of that will determined if it is passed or not. I went to this meeting. It was the first meeting of this kind that I have been to. I wanted to state how nice it was to see the BOAH team and the cervid members work together to come up with a proposal. I wanted to coment on this due to the fact that most everything I hear is how everyone is trying to screw the cervid industry. I went to this meeting fully expecting all negatives for the cervid producers.In my opinion the BOAH team went above and beyond to explain and inform what has been going on with these cases and to work with us not against us. In return they will have my full support in this proposal.
